Silent stillness in muffled pine woods, voices unheard

Leaving the Green Mountains of Vermont and heading eastward to New Hampshire, home of the White Mountains, the old conifers were so massive that they blocked out much of the sun. No undergrowth formed and the floor was so soft with needles that I walked on padded steps with barely a sound to be heard. No birds… no wind… not a rustle. Only the muffled sound of my steps broke the silence. The immense size of the trees above created a openness within the canopy that warped my sense of scale and made it seem to me that I had a perspective similar to that of the forest critters much smaller than me.
