Canopies and carpets of green, blushed birches seek the sunlight: The dense woods of Vermont held pleasant surprises. Once I crossed into the state, paper birches were suddenly everywhere. Their glowing peach and white pastel palette contrasted sharply with the bright green background surrounding their groves. The forest floor was covered in a carpet of moss that extended as far as the eye could see. Somehow, in this thick section of the woods, the birches found their niche and sought the light in the most direct way they could, standing perfectly straight with few low branches.
