Green curtains danced to the north: Along the final section of the Appalachian Trail, I camped along a loon-filled lake awaiting the full moon rising over the water. Having enjoyed that show for several hours, I was ready to turn in when I saw the amorphous green glow to the north for the first time in my life. I stood there in awestruck silence and watched the northern lights wave across the night sky as if curtains fluttering in the wind—an ultimate finale to my long journey.
