Howling winds up in the sky, I wonder if my tent will fly: In Georgia, I encountered some intense nighttime thunderstorms while camped in a saddle between two mountains. Without leaves on the trees, the wind from the approaching storm sounded like an incoming train from across the valley, building into a crescendo that consumed all other sounds. The overnight storm came in so hard, my tent was whipping around, the stakes were pulled from the ground, and puddles developed in the corners of my sleeping space. I spent most of the night star-fished to disperse my body weight across the tent floor. I truly hoped it was enough to keep me grounded.
