In the barren black forest, ghosts of trees past, sunlit, reveal their odiferous char
Hiking over roller-coaster hills in North Carolina and Tennessee, I came across vast stretches burned in 2016 by the forest fires that devastated whole sides of the mountains in the region. When the sun warmed the ground, the smell of the charred wood rose as if the fires spread just the day before. While the scene was upsetting, there were many areas where new growth was already emerging from the charred ground, bringing new hope for the future forest. I combined charcoal collected from the burned hills with transparent white ink to print the gray hill.
